-1Play-Doh: Christmas Craft Fun, from Silver Dolphin, is a hardcover book-with-craft kit that will help you get into the Christmas spirit. Inside the cover is a 32-page activity book, four 1 ounce cans of Play-Doh, a plastic knife, and a plastic roller. The book introduces kids to Holiday Hound, who acts as the guide in this holiday crafting extravaganza. Kids craft along on each page of the simple story about helping Jolly Town prepare for a visit from Santa. Each page is fully illustrated with Play-Doh-style artwork, and each turn of the page gives kids step-by-step instructions for how to build certain Christmas-y items, such as a Christmas tree, candy cane, snowman, and wreath.

My daughter, who is 4 years old and loves crafting activities, loved working on this with me, and also by herself. She needed help with certain elements, and it’s more fun to do as a team anyway. The step-by-step instructions were easy to follow, and were illustrated, so she was able to figure most of it out herself, but she preferred having me there to read the story, as well as the instructions, to her as we went.

20131214_202849One thing to note, is that it’s best if you have some extra Play-Doh on hand to work with. The amount provided in the kit is enough to make several of the items in the book, but there is not enough Doh to make all of the items at once. Also, some of the items in the book are made with colors that are not provided in the kit. Of course you can make these items with the colors provided, but if your child is like mine, he or she will want to try to duplicate the instructions as closely as possible. Luckily, we always have Play-Doh in the house so we were able to make everything illustrated, and in their “correct” colors.
