Duolingo is known for its persistent owl yelling at reminding adults to log in and learn new languages, but its newest app teaches kids how to read.

Using the same concepts as the original app, Duolingo ABC is a fun, hands-on way for kids to learn. It uses letter tracing, interactive storytelling, and other activities to teach kids ages 4 and up phonics, reading comprehension, and more. Parents can feel good knowing that there are no in-app purchases or ads barraging kids.

The app was made available earlier than originally intended to offer parents another resource for teaching their kids during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s one of many initiatives to help kids who are not currently in school due to the virus. Duolingo ABC offers offline learning, too; so, when this is all over, kids can learn anywhere they go.

Currently, the app is completely free, but it is only available for iPhones and iPads from the App Store.

As a kid, Nicole either wanted to be a professional toy player-wither or a writer. Somehow, as social media editor for The Toy Insider, The Toy Book, and The Pop Insider, she’s found a career as both. She's grateful to work somewhere that she can fully embrace both her love of teddy bears and her admiration for the Oxford comma. When she's not playing with toys at work, she's playing with her baby girl at home.
