Last year, Go Banana Go! hit the scene with Hi-Ya!, a kindie record that scored big with kids and parents alike. The big hit from the record was a single called “German Lessons” featuring vocals from German comedian Flula Borg (Pitch Perfect 2, Curb Your Enthusiasm) who kids may recognize as the voice of Dickory, one of the bounty hunter trolls in DreamWorks Trolls World Tour, or from his voice work in Boss Baby: Back in Business, Teen Titans Go!, Ralph Breaks the Internet, or DuckTales.
This Friday, Flula Borg & Go Banana Go! are back with It’s For You…, a six-song EP packed with dope beats and absurdist humor that’s designed for kids but is bound to be added to the playlist of many adults (myself included). Now, the Toy Insider is getting in on the action with the exclusive Media Mashup premiere of “Funky Fresh,” an upbeat tune about a day in the life of Flula. Grownups familiar with the work of popular comedy rockers Starbomb and NSP (as I’ve noted before, that’s an acronym you could Google) may know Brian Wecht — a retired theoretical physicist — under a different name: Ninja Brian of NSP. In Go Banana Go!, Wecht is joined by Jim Roach, a songwriter/producer who has worked with the likes of Amy Schumer, Linkin Park, and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, in addition to producing NSP’s Billboard chart-topping comedy albums.
It’s For You… was written and recorded during the pandemic with the trio rocking out — socially distanced 6-feet apart — in Wecht’s backyard in Los Angeles. Roach played guitar, Wecht played piano, and Borg played Flula. The trio notes that Wecht’s 6-year-old daughter served up occasional feedback while on break from the Zoom sessions that most families are quite familiar with as a staple of the remote learning era. Wecht says that she “enthusiastically approves of all the songs.”
Earlier this month the trio dropped the first single from the record, “Who Tooted?,” on which Flula learns that everybody toots.
Of course, the new record is packed with oddball goodness about bugs, banjos, and even “Rainbow Bacon.”
“Ever since I was a child I did wonder: What if you could grab a rainbow from the sky, cure it for 4-5 weeks, and then place it on a biscuit?,” Borg ponders.
