Usaopoly.MunchkinAdventureTimeWhat happens when the classic game of Munchkin combines with the totally flippin’ awesome antics of Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time? An action-packed, monster-slaying, treasure-grabbing game with kids’ favorite Adventure Time characters, including Finn, Jake, Marceline, BMO, Princess Bubblegum, and more at the center. Munchkin: Adventure Time, from USAopoly and based on Steve Jackson’s Munchkin, is designed for older kids ages 10 and up. Kids can play with three to six players and expect gameplay to last sometime between one to two hours depending on how they play.

The great news is that if you’ve played Munchkin before, this licensed version works exactly like the classic. (It’s like playing Pokémon Monopoly—the rules are the same as regular Monopoly, there’s just awesome characters featured on it.) When I opened the instructions, which covered six entire pages, I thought, What did I get myself into? It may seem daunting at first, but you do get the hang of it. The most important thing to get down first is how the phases of the game work, and the rest is just details—fun, exciting, wonderful details.

Inside the box are 168 cards, eight character cards, a die, and those really important instructions I told you about. Each player gets a hand of four Door cards, four Treasure cards, and a Character card. The most important card in a player’s hand is the Character card, as that card determines the special ability he or she has. For example, if a player is Finn he or she gets two bonus points when battling Level 10 monsters or above. Or, if someone is Lady Unicorn the special ability is that he or she can draw a Door or Treasure card whenever he or she is Looting the Room. Each player starts at Level 1 and the goal of the game is to be the first player to reach Level 10. Players can keep score using tokens, a piece of paper, coins, or anything (just make sure there are 10 per player).

The game begins when the first player Kicks Open the Door. In this first phase, a player draws the top card from the Door deck and turns it face up. If it’s a Monster, that player must fight it. The other cards that may be drawn are Class cards, Ally cards, or Monster enhancers. I suggest that during the first few rounds of play (if you haven’t played before) you start the game even if you haven’t read through all of the instructions, and then learn to play as you go. That way, you’ll know what to do when you’re in combat with a Monster, and when it’s your turn to either Look for Trouble or Loot the Room. Once the game gets going players will appreciate all of the rules because it keeps things fresh and they’ll realize that there are many different ways to get points, get out of fighting a Monster, and to—of course—make your friends’ Monster battles a lot harder for them (or easier, if you don’t like to win).

Adventure Time fans are going to love the familiarity between the show and the game, especially when they see their favorite characters, such as Tree Trunks, pop up on an Ally card, which grants players special bonuses and abilities that can be used during combat either right away or at a later time. Take a look at the video below for more insight on how to play, and make the game even more epic by combining different Munchkin sets and expansions!
