Stephen King is branching into the world of children’s books with a retelling that puts the “grim” back in Grimm’s fairytales.
The King of Horror is teaming up with Maurice Sendak, the late creator of Where the Wild Things Are, to pen a dark iteration of Hansel and Gretel. Inspired by the artist’s scenic design for the 1997 opera, King builds Sendak’s eerie, nostalgic artwork into a chilling adventure that kids will want to get lost in.
Little readers will be familiar with the beloved witch-in-the-woods tale, but they’ve never seen it like this! Siblings Hansel and Gretel accidentally get lost, and the only way out is through the gnarled woods. After close calls with a candy-coated cannibalistic witch, kids will discover how bravery, believing in themselves, and a handful of breadcrumbs can empower them to face any fear and find their way back home.
Don’t be scared! Hansel and Gretel is available to preorder now at the links below. The story will join your little library after Sept. 2.
