You can never have too many books, especially when they help kids explore different cultures.
The Katha Chest is an upcoming kids’ book written by Radhiah Chowdhury that explores the history of a Bangladeshi family and the magic of the stories sown into Nanu’s magical quilt. The story follows little Asiya on her journey of learning about her family’s past through her visits to her Nanu’s home.
In addition to Chowdhury’s writing, the book features vibrant illustrations from Lavanya Naidu. Parents can read along as kids see Asiya exploring the giant, yellow quilt and all the curvy patterns and designs on them. Each panel tells a different story about women from the past in Asiya’s family.
In The Katha Chest, readers see these stories imagined through Asiya from the personal experiences that the writer and the illustrator drew from to craft the story. Real-life kathas are crafted from old saris worn by women in the household. Each stitch of fabric represents a different walk of life and tells its own unique story of strength and resilience.
This picture book from Salaam Reads and Simon & Schuster Books will be available to purchase on Feb. 15.
