VR History Lets Kids View the Past with Their Own Eyes

  • Explores history from ancient times to the Civil Rights Movement
  • Can experience using VR glasses or on a phone
  • Comes with a wooden 3D puzzle

Designed for kids ages 8 and up, VR History is a way for kids to explore the history of humanity using virtual reality (VR). To get started, kids must download the VR History companion app to a cell phone. When the app is downloaded, kids can insert the phone into the included VR goggles and use them to explore the included DK history book. Many pages in the book feature a badge with the VR goggles. Kids scan the badge by looking at it and then are transported to a scene from history where a narrator provides context for the time period. The history book explores thousands of years of history, from prehistoric humans all the way to the Civil Rights movement and the 1960s. The set also comes with a 3D wooden puzzle of the HMS Victory, a British naval vessel built in the 1700s, so kids can have hands-on learning, too.

Kids can sometimes find it hard to engage with history, especially thousands of years before they or their families were alive. By merging one of DK’s history books with VR, kids can see and learn about history like they never have before. The 3D wooden puzzle of the HMS Victory is also a fun activity that combines problem-solving and puzzle-making with learning about the importance of the ship.

Kids may get nauseous using VR, especially if they’ve never used it before. If kids are prone to getting sick, they can use the alternative setting, which puts the VR scenes in 360 mode, so that kids can explore them by moving the phone around. If your kids love the History set, a World Art set and other sets are available.
