Many kids will spend more time at home this summer as COVID-19 rates continue to fluctuate. The internet can be a great way for kids to stay entertained and pass the time, which is why it’s important for parents to have a conversation about digital wellbeing.
The LEGO Group has launched an initiative called Small Builds for Big Conversations, a series of creative challenges that parents can use to teach their kids about online safety. The “Build & Talk” challenges use characters built from LEGO bricks, who represent both the positive and negative parts of the internet. Families can build similar LEGO characters at home to prompt discussions about avoiding potential dangers and use the internet responsibly.
Designed for kids ages 6-10, the builds are available in three themed activity packs that each include two character categories: the Online Explorers, which represent fun things that kids like to do online, and the Watch-Outs, which represent dangers of the internet. Parents can build the toys with their kids, while taking the opportunity to teach them about dangers to watch out for — including online bullying, talking to strangers, privacy, scams, in-game purchases, and more. Each activity pack includes talking points and questions to help parents start conversations with their kids. The content was all designed to follow UNICEF digital safety guidelines.
