At the Toy Insider, we spend a lot of time scouring retail shelves trade shows for the best stuff to tell you about to buy for your kids — we figured it’s time to give you a little love, too!
LEGO is building up fun for grown-ups — because we all know the benefits of play aren’t just for the little ones! In a dedicated section on their website, adults can find LEGO sets designed for kids-at-heart ages 18 and up, from classic art replicas and Star Wars spaceships to my personal favorite: houseplants!
And one of my top picks from LEGO’s line of botanical builds is the LEGO Orchid set, featuring 608 pieces to build up a potted orchid that stands more than 15 inches tall. The set took me about 2 calming hours to build — and is more complicated than meets the eye. Inside the plant’s blue fluted vase is an intricate build to keep it sturdy. All of the steps, blooms, roots, and leaves can be rotated and moved, so you can perfectly display the finished product.
This is definitely not the biggest or most difficult set in LEGO’s line for adults, but it still provides a fun challenge. The set comes with the pieces helpfully split into three separate bags so that you can construct the vase first, then the leaves, then your beautiful orchid flowers — which speaks to my heart’s desire to remain meticulously organized while building with my LEGOs. Since it takes a decent amount of time to build — and some of the pieces are unfamiliar to those who have only built the sets designed for kids — this set requires focus and concentration, which really promotes mindfulness, making for a soothing and relaxing activity.
Once this set is completed, it makes a perfect display in your home decor lineup. Its muted colors make it feel very chic and the fact that it’s made of LEGO pieces means it requires no maintenance. (Brb while I just remembered to water my living plants.) The six big flowers and two newly opened blooms give it an eye-catching look, so guests will do a double take before saying “oh, is that made of LEGOs?!”
Adults will love taking a break from the chaos of the world to build up botanical beauty with this kit that promotes mindfulness and relaxation. Whether you’re building this Orchid or one of the many other sets — peep that succulent set 👀 🪴 — LEGO can help your house feel more like a cozy home.
