Color-based card games are becoming more accessible!
Kids and families who experience colorblindness can expand their game collection, as Mattel is dedicated to making a large portion of their gaming collection colorblind accessible, including UNO and numerous UNO variants, Tumblin’ Monkeys, Blokus, Skip-Bo, and Phase 10. To make the games more inclusive, Mattel partnered with experts in the color vision deficiency field and worked with players who are colorblind.
The new versions of the games will feature patterns, tactile clues, and symbols for players to use while differentiating cards. If your family prefers digital play, you can still use the updated cards — mobile versions of games like UNO, Phase 10, and Skip-Bo will include colorblind identification. Mobile decks will feature symbols and shapes for players to identify instead of colors. Simply enable the “Beyond Colors” update in your personal account settings, which can be accessed via card deck options.
Mattel will also donate colorblind accessible games to certain YMCA summer camps, so your kids can play the games there if you don’t have a copy. You can expect 80% of the companies gaming portfolio to be colorblind accessible by the end of this year, and 90% to be more inclusive by the end of next year!
