Neopians young and old have been clambering for it, and it’s finally happening: Neopets will re-introduce its classic art style on Jan. 23!
The update to the online digital pet community means that players will have more choice going forward, being able to toggle between the “unconverted pet” (UC) style from pre-2007 gameplay, and “converted pet” style. The update will be an attempt at democratizing the UC Neopet experience, as UC pets are currently both quite scarce and highly valuable.
Before 2007, the Neopets art style was beloved, and defined by its somehow-already-retro look. The conversion was introduced when Neopets was sold to Viacom, and was intended to make pet customization easier and to shape Neopets into a more commercialized gameplay atmosphere. A few players were given the option, however, to keep their pets unconverted. These became the valuable UCs that we know today.
Remaining UCs will be automatically converted to the new style, giving every player an equal opportunity to customize their pet in either the classic UC style, or to update as desired. This folds into another exciting Neopets update. A new Styling Studio will be introduced, and will debut Neopets’ first non-binary character as its shopkeeper!
And for players who feel a little slighted at the loss of their pre-2007 pets, Neopets will reward old-timers with exclusive Old Pet Trophies. Long live Neopia!
