Super Mario joined the LEGO family in 2020, beginning with a Starter Course set featuring an interactive Mario figure that can make sounds and unlock special features in an app when it scans certain LEGO bricks. The collection has grown over the past few years to include more than a dozen sets featuring Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, and more iconic characters and scenes from Nintendo’s popular video game franchise. LEGO is launching six new Super Mario sets as we head into the new year, plus new character packs. Let’s take a look at them!
First off, all of the expansion sets require any Super Mario Starter Course to activate the interactive features. Kids can explore Peach’s Garden and Blue Toad’s house with the 453-piece Peach’s Garden Balloon Ride Expansion Set featuring a brick-built hot air balloon. There is a Super Star Block located in the “smoke” of Blue Toad’s chimney and kids can knock the top off the fountain to reveal a Coin Block. The set will be available for $49.99.
The Conkdor’s Noggin Bopper Expansion Set is a simple 130-piece build priced at only $14.99. Kids can use their LEGO Super Mario characters (sold separately) to jump on the trigger and dodge the Conkdor as it attacks, defeat the Conkdor by stomping on its head, and leap on the springboard to make the Conkdor rise again.
The Lava Wave Ride Expansion Set comes with 218 pieces for $34.99. Kids can use their figures to jump on the lava lift and rock on the wave, balancing so that they don’t fall into the flames while trying to knock the Lava Bubbles off the crests of the wave. When kids defeat the Fire Bro, they can collect digital coins in the app.
Kids can create an ice-breaking level with the 105-piece Ice Mario Suit and Frozen World Expansion Set for $24.99. It comes with an Ice Mario suit that creates unique reactions from a LEGO Mario figure (sold separately). Kids can make the figure “skate” on the buildable blue ice plates to trigger ice-skating sounds or propel the Cooligan into the ice block to reveal the Goomba.
The Fliprus Snow Adventure Expansion Set is another winter-themed set, this one containing 567 pieces for $64.99. Kids can battle the ice-ball-flinging Fliprus, knock the snowman’s head off onto the Red Koopa Troopa, defeat the Freezie to find the hidden frozen fruit, and gift the frozen fruit to the baby penguin.
The Creativity Toolbox Maker Set comes with 588 pieces that kids can use to create extra details for their Super Mario sets, like buildable trees, flowers, hills, pyramids, and more. It comes with three types of fruit, and even more LEGO Super Mario characters, including Wendy, a Blue Yoshi, and a Goomba. It will be available for $59.99.
Kids can also add additional characters to their Super Mario worlds with the Character Packs — Series 6. There are eight collectible characters, including Birdo, a Green Toad, an Ice Bro, a Bramball, two Cat Goombas in one pack, a Blooper and three baby Bloopers, and a Sumo Bro and a Spike for $5.99 each.
Some of these sets are recommended for kids ages 6 and up, while others are suggested for kids ages 7 and up. All of these new additions to the Super Mario collection will be available on lego.com on Jan. 1.
