The die-cast Matchbox cars just made the jump from the toy box to the screen.
This weekend, the first trailer for Matchbox The Movie revved its engines at Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC), giving kids of all ages an early look at Mattel’s legendary toy brand in a new, globe-trotting lane.
John Cena, Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, and Teyonah Parris attended the SDCC presentation for the action comedy from Apple Original Films, Skydance Media, and Mattel Studios.
Cena stars as Sean, an undercover CIA agent who returns to his hometown after a long absence. His arrival pulls a group of childhood friends (“The Matchbox Gang”) into an international chase — and a mission to save the world.
Sam Hargrave directed and executive-produced the film from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. The cast also includes Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger produced through Skydance Media. Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz produced for Mattel Studios alongside Jules Daly. Patrick Newall and Elizabeth Bassin served as executive producers.
Matchbox The Movie will premiere on Apple TV on Oct. 9.
