Back in 2017, WowWee released a line of tiny, interactive toy creatures that took the holiday season by storm. They were called Fingerlings because their rounded arms were the perfect shape and size to hug a finger, and they remained a popular, budget-friendly toy for a few years. Now, the monkey-like creatures have made a grand return to the toy aisle!

Designed for kids ages 5 and up, these adorable sidekicks feature more than 70 sounds and reactions that kids can discover by playing with them. These interactions can include petting the Fingerling’s head, talking to it, putting a finger to its mouth (to “feed” it), and more. The Fingerling is designed to sense when it is on or off kids’ fingers, and it will react differently accordingly. The Fingerling’s eyes also move, blinking as it talks and fully closing for “sleep” when kids lie it down.

In many ways, this new version of Fingerlings will evoke a sense of micro-nostalgia for those whose kids enjoyed the toy’s original version. Tweens may enjoy revisiting a memory from a few years ago, while younger siblings can get in on the Fingerlings craze and get to know their own pocket-size pal.

However, if you still have an original Fingerling in your toy box and compare it to one of these new characters, you’ll notice a few differences.

For example, the new Fingerlings have flocked heads with a tuft of hair on top, which makes the Fingerlings feel even more cuddly and provides an additional sensory experience for kids as they play. My personal favorite new feature, however, has to do with the tail. As with the original Fingerlings, the tail has a curve at the end so kids can hang the Fingerling from their finger, a belt loop, and more. However, the tail on the new version also has a hinge, so kids can push it back and put their Fingerling in a seated position. This is a major upgrade for the toy, which previously could only be upright when hugging kids’ fingers.

Overall, the new Fingerlings are a welcome refresh of a toy that is sure to evoke a smile, thanks to its adorable face and silly interactions. It’s also a toy that kids can enjoy straight out of the box! Of course, it’s worth taking a look at the instructions, but much of the Fingerlings fun comes from trying different actions to see how the creatures will react.

Plus, the Fingerlings cost just $15, which makes them an incredibly budget-friendly option. Whether you’re seeking a stocking stuffer or a special treat for a rainy day, the new roster of Fingerlings (which includes Ava, Charli, Leo, and Harmony) are sure to fit the bill!
