An unfortunate truth persists in toy aisles: Most of the products that line the shelves do harm to our earth by utilizing plastics and other unsustainable materials. But parents who want to combine the joy of a new toy with the knowledge that they’re making a responsible choice for their kids’ future have an exciting new option: Playper.

Playper is a brand that brings fantastical, buildable scenes to life in its signature not-quite-paper material. These scenes are rendered in Playboard, a plastic-free, 100% recyclable material with soy-based ink.

But what exactly is this “100% recyclable material”? According to Playper’s online FAQs, it’s a cardboard-based material with a velvety texture that’s biodegradable. And though it is recyclable, is not yet made from recycled materials.

The sets Playper offers include a Curious Kingdom: Castle Playset, which features characters Princess Petunia and King Ketchup, and a Dragon Trainer Playset, complete with knights and Snuffles the Dragon. Their third offering is the Story Starters card set, which is a make-your-own-rules game filled with person, place, and thing cards. Lastly, Playper offers a Gnome Catapult Playset in which kids can build a working catapult to launch little gnomes all around. The sets all incorporate STEAM elements as well, introducing physics concepts with its pop-and-play building style.

The Curious Kingdom Playset is $34.99, the Gnome Catapult Playset is $24.99, and the Dragon Trainer set is $14.99, as is the Curious Kingdom: Story Starters card set. So although eco-friendly toys don’t yet grow on trees, these STEAM-approved playsets are the roots to grow your family’s commitment to the environment.
