Sago Mini Space Explorer, from Sago Sago, is an adorable app for kids ages 2 to 4 to explore the extraterrestrial. The app opens with Harvey, a cute little astronaut dog, inside his house on his very own little space rock. Kids can move Harvey around the screen by dragging their finger around, taking Harvey on an adventure through outer space. Along the way, Harvey meets aliens and other space creatures, and enjoys playing games, eating tasty treats, and bursting through star fields.
The animation in this app is whimsical and mysterious, encouraging kids to keep exploring to find more surprises. The background is shades of dark blue/grey, mimicking space, and as Harvey moves from element to element, he appears to move deeper into the space, thanks to layers of the background moving to the forefront. I particularly like the star field, which looks almost like a cloud of stars that Harvey can fly through. As he flies through the stars, they disappear and make a magical charm sound, before reappearing. I found myself spending more time flying Harvey around the star field than any other part of the app. Other fun elements include playing ball with a kitten that flies around in a hot air balloon, playing on a see-saw with some space creature friends, munching on a hot dog, and playing peek-a-boo with a crater-dwelling space monster. It’s a very cute app that is sure to hold kids’ attention as they search space for the more than 30 surprises the app contains. Sago Mini Space Explorer is available for iOS devices.
