Most people recognize the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as cartoon characters from various Nickelodeon TV series throughout the years, but Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael actually got their start as comic book characters in 1984. Fans have spent more than $1 billion on TMNT toys over the years and there have been many different action figures featuring the heroes in a half-shell. The Loyal Subjects has a new collection out now and it’s different from anything I’ve seen before.

Recommended for kids ages 8 and up, the TMNT BST AXN Comic Heroes 5-inch Figures feature an edgier look than the animated characters because they’re inspired by the artwork from comic legend Mateus Santolouco and comic book publisher IDW. Santolouco also created exclusive TMNT artwork for the packaging and collector cards that come with the figures.

Each 1:15-scale figure has 31 points of articulation at the shoulders, knees, thighs, ankles, wrists, and elbows, making them super flexible for role-playing. While a lot of action figures claim to be highly detailed, these ones really are. If you look closely you’ll see sinewy muscles bulging from the turtles’ necks, biceps, and legs (these guys definitely work out); faint veins on the tops of their heads; and reptilian details on the back of their heads and shells. Each figure also comes with two heads for different facial expressions, multiple hand grips, and character-specific accessories and weapons. Kids can just pull on the figure’s head or hands firmly to pop them off and swap them with the other versions.

Master Splinter taught these turtles every single skill they need to be one lean, mean, green, incredible team. Michelangelo comes with two pairs of nunchucks; Donatello comes with an anti-gravity gauntlet, goggles, and a bo staff; Raphael comes with throwing stars, twin sais, and Tonfās; and Leonardo comes with twin sais, double katana swords, and a translucent “wind” sword attachment to depict movement. Kids can place the weapons in the figures’ hands or in their sashes or belts, where they are easily accessible while the turtles are battling (they are ninjas, after all).

The collector cards add a fun touch for TMNT fans, giving a quick explainer on each turtle’s personality. There are also thoughtful details built into the design of the figures, like Mikey’s playful wink since he’s known for his sense of humor and wisecracks.

There’s no stopping these radical dudes, so bring all four Ninja Turtles together with the TMNT BST AXN Comic Heroes 5-inch Figures!
