Skee-Ball is a true classic that’s been delighting players of all ages for more than a century.
Whether you come across a Skee-Ball game at a boardwalk, carnival, or arcade, the timeless challenge of rolling a high score is a compelling, nearly irresistible draw. And because of that, families are always looking for ways to bring the action home.
The biggest factors in adapting Skee-Ball for the at-home market are size (the real machines are huge), cost (again, big, electronic, and mechanical), and capturing the essence of the gameplay. In recent years, the official Skee-Ball brand has been licensed to many companies, with products ranging from tabletop replicas to high-end, professional-quality alleys.
For most families, the sweet spot is something in the middle and one of EastPoint Sports’ latest offerings might hit the bullseye.
The Skee-Ball Steel Frame Game is a portable alley that folds for space-saving storage. It’s lightweight and comes with four Skee-Balls. This version has built-in, battery-operated electronic scoring (with sound!) for single- or two-player games.
Assembly is fairly easy but is best approached as a two-person job. In our experience, the real trick is making sure that the nylon material that comprises the alley surface and ball return stays firm, taut, and aligned throughout the gameplay. As long as that happens, the familiar (and addictive!) gameplay pattern works well, but there are a couple of caveats.
For experienced players and Skee-Ball enthusiasts, the traditional weight and heft are missing here. The familiar feel of the heavy Skee-Balls and how they drop, clunk, and roll on a wooden alley is really hard to replicate at this price point — but it doesn’t mean that this isn’t fun. Quite the opposite!
Last fall, we had our annual block party and the two biggest hits were both EastPoint Sports games: Giant Connect 4 (see that one in action here) and this Skee-Ball Frame Game! The kids in the neighborhood, many of whom had never played Skee-Ball, were instantly hooked and we had a line of eager players waiting in the wings. It was such a popular attraction that neighborhood parents asked me to bring it back out for our Halloween party (I did!).
With home arcades and game rooms growing in popularity, this Skee-Ball Frame Game is a great option for something that can fit in alongside home arcade cabinets when folded and placed up against the wall for storage. When you’re ready to play, simply unfold the alley and get ready to roll!
Game on!
