The LEGO Group launched its collaboration with Lucasfilm in 1999 timed with the release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Over the past 25 years, LEGO Star Wars has grown to include hundreds of building sets, video games, and animated specials. While R2-D2 (or Artoo-Deetoo for the old-school crowd) has been released in several variations, the retired sets go for big bucks these days. This set is a perfect nod to Star Wars history as R2-D2 has been a constant presence throughout the nine-film Skywalker Saga and is a character that fans of all ages are familiar with.

I spent a Saturday afternoon building R2-D2 with my nephew and we enjoyed the thoughtful play features, including articulated legs, a rotating dome (head), and the optional tools that can be added to panels on R2’s chest. The included minifigures of R2-D2 and Darth Malak (an interesting choice as this “Darth” is a bit of a deep cut for casual fans originating in the video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) add to the fun and collectibility.

Allow at least 4 hours of building time. Although you don’t have to build R2-D2 in a marathon session — the Empire probably isn’t chasing anyone, so take your time and enjoy the build without rushing.
