60 Minutes+ correspondent Enrique Acevedo will host a segment about the history of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, a town that saw disputes between European and Latino immigrant groups over settlement in the area more than 100 years ago. The feud inspired the creation of the ongoing Hazleton Integration Project (HIP), a community-based center that unites the multicultural residents of Hazleton by offering a myriad of programs, including ESL, virtual STEM afterschool classes, sports activities, and others. Five kids and their families will share the story of their experience emigrating to Hazleton from the Dominican Republic and how they found support in the HIP programs.
Other segments will feature former President George W. Bush’s new book, Out of Many, One: Portraits of America’s Immigrants, a collection of 43 portraits of immigrants painted by Bush. Rory Hu from Time for Kids will test viewers’ knowledge of civics with questions that all immigrants must answer when taking the test to become U.S. citizens. To wrap up the feature, Nancy Pelosi will review and explain the question: “Who would assume control of the country if the President and Vice President of the U.S. are unable to serve?”
Nick News: Kids, Immigration, and Equality will premiere on Nickelodeon and will be available on nick.com, the Nick App, and Nick On Demand beginning on June 18. The special will air on the Nickelodeon YouTube channel on June 22.
