It’s a great time to be a Sonic the Hedgehog fan!
At The Game Awards 2021, actors Jim Carrey (Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik) and Ben Schwartz (voice of Sonic the Hedgehog) kicked off a new era of supersonic action by dropping the first look at the trailer for Paramount Pictures‘ Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
The much-anticipated sequel to 2020’s hit film, Sonic the Hedgehog finds the Blur Blur settled into Green Hills and ready to prove his worth as a true hero. Of course, Dr. Robotnik is back on the attack, and this time he has a sidekick — Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) — but Sonic has one, too! As teased at the end of the first film, Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey) joins the adventure for a globetrotting journey in search of a powerful emerald. Check out the trailer below!
The creative team from the first film, including director Jeff Fowler and screenwriters Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, are back, along with returning cast members James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, and Adam Pally, with Shemar Moore in a new role.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hits theaters on April 8, 2022, but the film isn’t the only big piece of Sonic entertainment on deck for the new year.
During The Game Awards, SEGA pulled back the curtain on Sonic Frontiers, an all-new next-generation video game that will be released for next year’s holiday season. Sonic Frontiers will be released for multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Check out the announcement trailer below!
Of course, there will also be plenty of new Sonic toys and gear released next year as well. Jakks Pacific renewed its licensing agreement with SEGA of America to produce action figures, playsets, vehicles, plush, and other collectibles inspired by both classic and modern depictions of the iconic video game character and his world.
Fans can also look forward to a new animated series, Sonic Prime, set to debut on Netflix in the months ahead.
