Kids looking for some spooky summer reading have a new chance to read about the things that go bump in the night.

Out on June 16, The Weirn Books, Vol. 1: Be Wary of the Silent Woods takes place in a world in which shifters, vampires, witches, and more roam the streets *and* go to school. The main character, Ailis Thorton, is a weirn (a witch whose guardian spirit is a demon) who lives with her grandmother and astral, a witch’s pet — which can be mischievous, but hers just digs stuff out of the ground.

Ailis attends school on weeknights with her cousin Na’ya — together they’re called the “loser cousins” by their arch-enemy, Patricia Chow. Patricia is at the top of the social hierarchy and won’t let the cousins forget it. The graphic novel mixes relatable characters and storyline with out-of-this-world ideas.

Svetlana Chmakova, the author of The Weirn Books, is best known for her work in the best-selling graphic novels Awkward, Brave, and Crush. Kids between ages 8 and 12 will surely have a magical time getting lost in the start of this new series.

Nicole Savas

As a kid, Nicole either wanted to be a professional toy player-wither or a writer. Somehow, as social media editor for The Toy Insider, The Toy Book, and The Pop Insider, she’s found a career as both. She's grateful to work somewhere that she can fully embrace both her love of teddy bears and her admiration for the Oxford comma. When she's not playing with toys at work, she's playing with her baby girl at home.
