Not many kids’ shows focus on characters with autism. In PBS Kids’ upcoming animated show, the main character has autism and helps neurodivergent kids celebrate who they are!
Designed for kids ages 4 and up, Carl the Collector follows Carl, a raccoon who is autistic and loves collecting things, and his friends from Fuzzytown as they work together to solve problems and build a strong community in their neighborhood. Carl is super focused, has great attention to detail, and has a special way of looking at the world around him. His unique personality and his special collection come in handy as the show goes on.
The other characters in the show include both neurotypical and neurodiverse characters with different traits, behaviors, learning preferences, and challenges. Carl’s best friend, Sheldon, is a beaver who is quick on his feet and always looks out for the underdog. Lotta, a fox, artist, and musician, is also autistic and is sensitive to loud sounds, powerful smells, and certain food textures. Nico and Arugula are twin bunny sisters who may look identical but couldn’t be more different when it comes to personality. Finally, Forrest is a hyperactive and impulsive squirrel with a tree nut allergy and is always ready to jump into the action.
Carl the Collector is expected to hit screens at PBS Kids starting next fall. When kids start watching this show, it will be easier than ever to celebrate the different things that make both neurodiverse and neurotypical kids unique!
