Growing up, who didn’t love to play hide and seek? Finding the best spots was always such a thrill as people went right by you and never knew you were there. Of course, as we all got bigger, fitting in those hard to find spots isn’t as easy as it used to be, which is why Foley Games put a new twist on the game. Designed for kids ages 12 and up, Free-O turns that classic game you used to love into a card game.
To start off the game, each player gets six cards with four types of cards in the game. The first type of card is the Seek and Match card. These cards feature different places where players might be able to hide, including fences, bushes, trees, garages, and more. Free-O Wilds can be used to match Seek and Match cards or offset the You Are Captured card. Finally, players can add cards to their opponents’ decks with Draw a Card cards.
Each card can only be played during certain parts of the game. For example, players can only play You are Captured cards in response to Seek and Match cards, and the Draw a Card cards can only after a previous match has been made. As the players go around the circle, their hands should shrink until a player runs out of cards and ends the round. At the end of the round, the players who still have cards in their hands add up their points. A You Are Captured card is worth 10 points, a Seek and Match card is worth two points, a Draw a Card card is worth one point, and a Free-O Wild Card subtracts a point from your total score. The rounds continue until a player hits 60 points, but the player with the least amount of points at the end of the game wins.
Free-O seemed confusing at first, but it is easy to pick up on with simple card designs and rules. In fact, the game went pretty quickly once we got the hang of it. In all, each game takes around 20-30 minutes, but the rounds in the game can be just a few minutes, especially if someone gets really lucky and gets a lot of Free-O wild cards. Free-O is a great game to bring along on a camping trip or to play a few quick matches to round out family game night.
