It’s an age-old debate: Waffles or pancakes? Both of these delicious breakfast foods have their fair share of fans, so how will a winner be decided? That’s where the party game Waffles vs Pancakes from Relatable comes in.

Waffles vs Pancakes is the ultimate showdown for players ages 8 and up, who are tasked with scooping up as many waffles or pancakes as they can before time runs out … while blindfolded, of course. The game suggests playing with two or more players, but I found that optimal gameplay occurs when there are four or more. This way, each player can have someone else on their team instructing them on what to do while blindfolded. The box comes with 50 cards, two spatulas, two plates, two blindfolds, and one 60-second sand timer.

The instructions are very easy to follow. Simply scatter the waffle and pancake cards across a flat surface of your choice, shuffling in the Food Fighter and Totally Toast cards. Split into two teams, don the blindfold, and then scoop up as many of your team’s cards as possible onto your plate before the sand timer runs out. Players will also try to grab the bonus Food Fighter cards, evade the enemy, and avoid the Totally Toast card. Play continues until everyone has been blindfolded at least once and the team with the most points wins.

The Food Fighter cards provide extra challenges for you or the other team to do, enhancing gameplay. Some can be pretty sweet, while others might place you in a sticky situation. For example, I got one card called “Cluck Stuck,” which said the only noise I could make that round was the cluck of a chicken. On the other hand, the Totally Toast card raises the stakes. If that card ever touches your plate, the round is automatically over and the other team wins that round.

There are some important rules to remember when playing Waffles vs Pancakes that keep things fair. For instance, your team cannot touch you or your plate, but they can tell you how, where, or when to scoop. Other rules increase the excitement, such as the ability to hit the opposing team’s plate with your spatula.

The contents of the game are designed well, especially the cards, which are slightly bent on purpose to be easier to pick up. The spatulas are firm and make scooping up the cards very simple. One negative is that the plates are fairly thin and liable to be bent during competitive gameplay. However, this could be addressed by using whatever plates you have around if these ones do happen to get damaged.

Overall, Waffles vs Pancakes is a fan-flipping-tastic game for the whole family on game night.
