We are headed into the part of winter that I dread. The part where it gets too cold to be outside and the kids get bored with being stuck indoors. That’s when I have to get a little creative and come up with some fun projects for us to do together.
Our latest venture? Gak! The boys always beg me to buy it when we are out and I knew it was pretty easy to make at home. I gathered all of our materials this past weekend to make our own and it was so simple!
To make your own Gak, you will need:
- 4 oz of Elmer’s glue
- 1/2 tsp Borax (you can find this down the laundry detergent aisle)
- 1/4 cup warm water
- Gel food coloring
- 1 tsp fine glitter (optional)
Start by emptying the 4 oz of Elmer’s glue into a glass bowl. Fill the empty glue bottle with warm water and shake. Empty water into bowl. Stir together. Then, add food coloring. We used about half a container to get ours to the preferred shade of green. If you are going to add glitter, add it now! Mix well.
In another glass container, dissolve 1/2 tsp of Borax into 1/4 cup of warm water. Mix until completely dissolved.
Add Borax mixture into glue mixture. Stir and mix well. The glue will become stringy and you may need to use your hands to mix!
When it’s fully mixed, you will have a jelly like consistency and your very own Gak. The more you play with the Gak, the smoother and stretchier it will get! If you happen to pull it completely apart, just knead it back together.
When you are done playing with it, store in a plastic bag or airtight container.
See how easy it is to make your own GAK at home!
